Paper Aeroplanes

20th Jan 2020

Primary Seven’s new World Around Us topic is Flight. One such way of demonstrating the forces that enable a plane to fly is to build and create a paper aeroplane. There are four forces at work when a plane flies, lift, thrust, drag and gravity. As you can see in the video, the thrust that enables forward motion is due to me throwing the plane by my arm. This generates power to enable lift. Once that power dissepitates, drag and eventually gravity takes over and it falls back to the ground. Pupils will be creating their own planes tomorrow. The one with the straightest edges and best thrust will go the furthest. A very practical way to show these forces at work. The kids were appreciative of the videoing experience.
