This morning, members of the Confucius Institute from the University of Ulster, came into visit P7T and P7MM to help our classes learn all about Chinese New Year. February 1st is the beginning of Chinese New Year, and this year is the year of the Tiger. Pupils were treated to costume dress up including a Panda outfit and a Dragon. They learned all about the origins of the Chinese New Year, learning about Nian the Dragon, and how he was scared away by the couloir red, loud noises and fire. Pupils loved learning about the tale, and were also treated to some traditional Chinese music. A truly wonderful moment that captivated the entire room. To end the workshop, pupils coloured in and designed their own traditional Chinese Opera masks. They loved asking questions and learning all about Chinese culture. As you can see from the photos, they had a lot of fun! Many thanks to the institute for their time, passion and expertise telling us all about the New Year. Much appreciated!

P4S recently travelled to the Palace Stables in Armagh for an educational trip to extend their knowledge of WW2, our present World Around Us topic. Some of the boys and girls dressed up as evacuees and they really did look like children from the 1940s. Firstly we made identity cards (to ensure there were no spies in our party 😉)and evacuee labels. Then we learnt more about food rationing. After that, we visited Mr Heaney in his war time kitchen. When the siren went off, he and Air Raid Warden, Cole, led us to the Anderson shelter. Finally we met Sergeant Willis, an American GI, who taught us how to drill and send coded messages. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience of war time life.
