On Tuesday 17th December, P7MM thoroughly enjoyed a whole day of technology. The children worked in pairs, or groups of three, and could decide whether they wanted to complete a project relating to Rainforests or the Titanic; both topics that we have studied during Term 1.
Rainforest Technology
The aim of this project was to build a rainforest inside a shoebox. We learned over the course of the topic about the different layers in the rainforest as well as the plants and animals that live there. We used this information to help us choose the colours and animals for inside our shoe box. We had to carefully use tabs to place our trees in position and stabilise them using hot glue guns. We were so pleased with the results - have a look at the photos below to see for yourself!
Titanic Technology
The children who chose to complete a technology project on the Titanic were tasked with creating a model of the Harland and Wolff cranes that famously helped to build the Titanic. The first step was to paint everything yellow, including the tables, floor and even some of our uniforms!! The children then used some problem solving skills to create the different component, ensuring they fitted together. The final aspect of the project was to fit the pulley and hook. Again, we were delighted with the results - take a look below!
19 pupils from both P7 classes visited Lismore Comprehensive at the start of December. The children had a great morning’s fun, and got a real taste for what life will be like next year at post primary school, wherever they decide to go. The children took part in a coding activity in the ICT room, a drama activity, and finished off with a quiz in the hall.
There has been lots of excitement this month preparing for Christmas. We have made our own salt dough decorations; making the dough, rolling it, cutting out Christmas shapes, cooking them, painting them and adding a little sparkle to finish them off! We have also made beautiful glittering stars to hang on our Christmas trees. With Christmas fast approaching we were practising wrapping presents; carefully using scissors to cut the paper and then wrap it around boxes. It was a little bit tricky holding the paper and sticking it down with sellotape but we enjoyed working together with our friends which made it whole lot easier! We then put the presents under our Christmas tree in Nursery. We also painted Christmas pictures, made model snowmen, sorted bows, cooked Christmas dinner in the home corner, made chimneys for Santa and lots more!
We enjoyed writing our letters to Santa and were very excited when the Postman visited us in Nursery with a special delivery all the way from the North Pole!
We had a wonderful day, visiting Santa in his cottage and enjoying lots of fun activities.
We have been making friends with Year 1 children from Presentation P.S. and taking part in fun numeracy activities during our shared lessons.
The children have had lots of fun engaging in activities during playtime.
Stephen and Aaron from Portadown Fire Station spoke to both P5 Classes on the importance of Fire Safety in the home in the run up to Christmas. They were very impressed with the children’s listening skills and also the wide range of questions that the children asked. Hopefully, what the children heard and learned today will stand them in good stead if they ever are faced with a Fire in their home.
We had a great day at Spruce Meadows on our Nursery Christmas trip. We had fun doing some Christmas crafts, bouncing in the disco bouncy castle, learning about and holding the various reptiles before enjoying a train ride to visit Santa in his cottage and stopping off to sit up in his sleigh and see the animals on the way back. After such a busy day there were a lot of sleepy children on the way home.... always the sign of a brilliant action packed day!
