As it is winter time we have been observing the weather! We have been exploring the concepts of freezing and melting, floating and sinking and have experimented to make snow! It has been fun learning about cold colours and using recyclable materials to feed the birds and make igloo’s and cold icy homes.

In our role play area we were busy doing the shopping, writing shopping lists and learning about numbers as we paid for all our groceries. Our trip to the shop helped us in our role play as we used this experience to develop our play.

As we played with a variety of materials this month we talked about what things were made from. We found items in our classroom that were made of metal, cardboard, plastic and fabric and were really keen to investigate and explore with the magnetic wands to find things that ‘attract’. We discovered that the metal items ‘attract’ and are ‘magnetic’.

As we were thinking of winter we snuggled down under the blankets and read some stories about various winter animals. During our music and movement sessions we had fun waddling like a penguin, stomping like polar bear and sliding like a seal. Winter time is fun!

In P7T, we discussed about dealing with our worries. This was an insight into pupil thinking as many concerns came to the fore like: thinking ahead to Clounagh, homework and changing friendships when heading into year 8. We talked about how we can deal with our worries, and what we can do to relax and reach a calmer state of mind. After some great discussion, pupils then went into the computer room to create posters on ‘Mindfulness Tips’ to help alleviate some of the concerns that they have. A productive and worthwhile afternoon! This is Health Awareness week, and mental health is an extremely important aspect of that.
