We have had a busy month having fun exploring, investigating and discovering!
We have discussed a lot about our feelings and continue to develop a greater awareness of ourselves, each other and the natural environment. The children have loved being able to help the birds by putting out seeds and fat balls. They enjoyed watching them, learning to identify all the birds that have visited our Nursery garden and listening to their beautiful songs.
The weather has given us lots of opportunities to learn about freezing and melting. We experimented by making iceboats and ice-skating penguins!
We also investigated a variety of materials, explored clay and we even made our own snow!
Winter
Our topic of winter has provided us with lots of opportunities to learn and develop this month. We have been busy doing winter puzzles, role playing in the shop, dressing up in winter clothes and in sparkly materials, exploring winter animals, making tea and toast for snack to keep warm and snuggling up in the quiet room with a blanket and good book!
Outside we kept warm by dancing to the music and singing our hearts out while inside we used our bodies to roll up like a snowball, stand tall and long like an icicle, spread out like a snowflake and melt like ice. It has been great fun!
Materials
We have been learning about and investigating materials such as glass, plastic, metal, paper, wood and fabric. We also talked about recycling and have been busy re-using our rubbish and recycling at our Nursery.
It's Cold
We had fun learning about frost, ice, freezing and melting. It was fun making a huge Jack Frost by mixing paint to make shades of blue and using shiny materials for icicles. Then we made icy, cold snowflakes.
We also put some water into a bowl with some toys and then set it into the freezer overnight. In the morning the ice was frozen. We put it on our tuff spot and used hammers to chip at the ice to get the toys. While we were doing this we observed how the ice started to melt.
There were lots of opportunity to explore and investigate as we made our very own snow in the sand tray, played developed our sensory awareness with white foam and built our own igloos using sugar cubes.
Birds in Winter
As part of our topic of Winter we have been learning about how important it is to look after the birds. Using recyclable materials we got to work making bird feeders. We filled our feeders with bird seed and food and then hung them out. Not long after we noticed lots of birds tweeting and singing in the trees. Using our bird chart and binoculars we enjoyed bird watching to find that the most frequent visitor to our garden was the starling!
We also enjoyed being creative and working with clay. Some of us made slabs and used tools to mark and draw little birds while others made nests and eggs.
You will see that we enjoyed painting some of the birds in our garden.
Congratulations to Kajus, Sophie and Nadia for working hard and behaving well to earn a special certificate during January special assembly. Well done 😄
P6H took part in their Shared Education project during January. The project initially looked at different cultures and sporting symbols. Then the children completed a series of sporting lessons down at Portadown Peoples Park. The children were taught the history and techinques of differnt sports, which included; Soccer, Hockey, Rugby and Gaelic. The children had great fun learning all about the different sports.
