This morning P3F welcomed Sarah from Debutots.
She read us a story about Daisy who was struggling with how to cope with her feelings and emotions.
We practised some exercises to help us when we feel angry, and spoke about what we should do when we feel sad.

P7T did a great job yesterday discussing the sensitive topic of mental heath. We spent the afternoon discussing what ill feelings can create bad mental health, and what good feelings can create good mental health. Children then spent time creating short snappy videos with their suggestions on how to improve their mental health. These videos were then collated together to create our class production. We hope you enjoy what the children did. They had a lot of fun creating it.

For me, it’s critical that pupils feel safe, secure and happy within the school learning environment. For this academic year, Hart staff have been focusing on creating a nurturing environment in school, where children feel relaxed yet empowered to reach their full learning potential. After a busy day, children enjoy the focus of mindfulness colouring. Pupils focus on the task at hand, focusing their minds, creating a flowing experience of pencil to paper. Pupils enjoy it as it does settle them to then move onto other tasks. Well done P7.

P7T’s main WAU topic at the moment is ‘Flight’. This has included learning about planes and birds, and how they fly. It also includes learning about some famous aviators including the pioneer pilot Amelia Earhart. The children loved learning about the life and achievements of this famous woman, including her infamous disappearance. Pupils were fascinated hearing about her many accolades and were shocked that someone so talented could vanish into thin air. Pupils had to read a text and answer questions - they were drawn in - and were really interested to learn more. We have been focusing on extending our sentences in literacy and adding detail to our answers. In particular, using our inference skills to good effect. So important! A good mornings work!

P7T did a simple but effective science experiment to gauge the effect of cold water on the human body. Children had to build a simple Lego tower in normal temperatures then dip their hands into icy water and then rebuild the tower, as best as they could. The hypothesis was that our bodies would be slower due to the cold water. As you can see from the pictures and videos, the children really loved getting involved. This was to show the children how passengers on the Titanic would have felt plunging into the icy waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, and where unfortunately many people lost their lives. Hypothermia killed more people than actual drowning. Some really useful conversations came out of this lesson as children came up with practical ways to treat people in cold water shock. A great afternoon spent.

P7T have started revising about Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. This essential numeracy knowledge is critical to their education and day to day numeracy usage. A great emphasis is placed upon calculating and working out percentage of amounts in both primary school and post primary. Help your child understand the equivalence between the three representations of number.

As part of the WAU topic this half term, P5DK have been busy building lighthouses. They used their knowledge of electrical circuits to create a circuit that had a switch to turn a light on and off. Using a variety of materials they worked in groups to create a lighthouse. The circuit was then placed inside the lighthouse and the bulb on top. Here are some photographs to show what they created.

This month we were very busy having fun exploring and investigating different materials and also learning about freezing and melting.  We enjoyed finding out about different birds, making bird food to help look after them in the winter then watching them eat and enjoy it. We also loved making our own snow.
