This morning we enjoyed a visit by Orla from Young Enterprise. During our session, we discussed what makes up our community, other facilities we might like to have in our community and the important people and jobs that add to our community. We also learned how important our taxes are in paying for the services we take for granted such as medical care, education, rubbish collections, leisure centres, etc. We finished off the session by working in groups to design our own communities and what we’d like in them. The children thoroughly enjoyed their morning.

We met with our friends from Presentation to enjoy another Shared Education lesson. We played ‘Friends’ Bingo’. This was a really fun way of finding out much more about each other. We also learned lots more about Evacuation during WW2 and how this affected children and their families. We ‘packed’ our suitcases and made Evacuee figures, adding speech bubbles so they could tell us how they felt leaving their families, not knowing when or if they would see them again. We had a super day and look forward to seeing our friends again at our fun day in June.

We had a really interesting and fun time today when we travelled to the Palace Stables in Armagh to learn more about WW2. Some of us dressed up as Evacuee children and really looked the part. We met Mr Heany, the Evacuee Officer and Colonel Shepherd from the American army. As you can see from the pictures, we had a great day.

We were delighted to have our friends from Presentation PS visit us for our first Shared Education session last week. Our lesson was based on our WAU topic for this term which is WW2. We learnt about the Belfast Blitz and joined together to make models of Anderson Shelters from shoe boxes. Learning together was great fun as you can see from the pictures.

Today we enjoyed a trip to watch the Ulster Orchestra perform a special schools’ concert in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. This was a fantastic opportunity to hear live music and the children thoroughly enjoyed it. We were introduced to the different sections of the orchestra and listened to music based on the theme of ‘Our Wonderful World’. The children’s favourite piece was ‘The Bare Necessities’ and the percussion section playing on Dustbins and saucepans was also enjoyed by all. We also joined in at the end of the concert to sing the classic song, ‘ What a Wonderful World’.  Unfortunately recording and photography was not allowed during the performance but here are a few pictures of our day out.

This term our WAU topic has been ‘Trees’ and the children have really enjoyed learning about seasonal changes, seeds and why trees are important to our environment. As part of our exploration we went on a scavenger hunt and gathered natural materials, which we examined and sorted. We then made Mandalas with them. Finally we planted the conkers and acorns we’d gathered. Hopefully we will all have seedlings to take home next spring.

This morning, Amanda from REIM visited our classroom to help us learn how to stay safe on line. We discussed cyber bullying, how it might make us feel and how  to deal with it. We also decided who our ‘trusted adults’ might be. We learnt some important life lessons in a fun way and know much more about how to stay safe on line.
