Primary 7 learned this afternoon about dealing and recognising with our emotions. Whether we get scared, angry or anxious there are certain techniques who can employed to calm ourselves to reach a more stable state of mind. We tried out some calming exercises to help maintain a healthy manner. We also brainstormed some of our calming techniques and completed some emotion wheels which can be used to show our state of mind to the teacher in a non verbal manner. A lovely afternoon learning!

P7T have been focusing in their literacy learning about William Shakespeare, and one of his most famous plays Macbeth. Pupils have been fascinated with the language and different themes Shakespeare utilises in this tragedy. Good vs evil, power vs desire, and the urge to resist temptation. They have loved investigating the different characters and the plot of the story, and have been really enthusiastic about what they think is going happen. Shakespeare uses language to the most expert effect, and brings the audience with him, grabbing their attention and sustaining their interest. The kids have loved the story so far, and I have thoroughly enjoyed bringing the story to life for them. Some great learning!

P7T are working with local artist Stephen Mackey in creating and building a garden bench. The bench is made from locally sourced wood materials providing strength and durability, it’s also eco-friendly and helpful to the environment. Pupils have been enthralled at the use of different power tools and cutting instruments used to mound and build the bench. This is an 8 week project for all pupils and from the photos and videos, you can see they are having a great time!

Primary 7’s next WAU topic is the Titanic. Pupils loved learning about the story of the ill stricken liner. Every year, pupils get enthusiastic absorbing information about Harland and Wolff, White Star Line, the passengers, the crew and the sinking itself. Yesterday, pupils completed a drawing and researched some facts. Firstly, we had a discussion about what pupils already knew and I was thoroughly impressed by the wealth of knowledge and understanding in the room. We then completed a 3D pencil drawing of the Titanic, and as you can see, there are some really talented artists. Pupils then discussed questions they would like to investigate and pupils then had time to responsibly research some trivia/facts about Belfast’s greatest export. A wonderful afternoon had.

Primary 7’s next topic is Titanic. The story of the ill-stricken ship is one that captures the imaginations of our pupils. They love learning the different facts and finding out all the trivial information about Belfast, Harland and Wolff, White Star Line, and all the different passengers. The first thing we did was recap what information we knew, and I was thoroughly impressed at the wealth of knowledge and understanding in the room. I then led pupils through a step by step 3D drawing of the ship itself, and as you can see, there are some very talented artists in the room. Pupils then thought about some questions that they would like to ask about Titanicr and from that researched different facts about Belfast’s greatest export.

Cormac from HIC delivered an anti-bullying workshop to our P7 pupils to build upon the learning already consolidated during this important week. Pupils recapped the different forms of bullying and discussed the layered impacts that bullying can have on the individual. Our pupils recognise physical, verbal, non-verbal, emotional and cyber bullying - and are aware of how this can impact the mental health of the victim. There is no place for bullying in this school and we believe that it can be eradicated when ‘Change starts with you’. Many thanks to Cormac for an engaging and challenging workshop. Great job P7!

Yesterday afternoon, P5P invited our P7 class to work with and collaborate with them on building and extending their knowledge and understanding of using the IZAK 9 cubes and how to work as part of a team. This fantastic numeracy resource is used primarily in Key Stage 2, so this was a fitting opportunity for the P7 pupils to aid their P5 counterparts. As you can see from the photographs, children worked well together and communicated effectively. P5 will appreciate this extra assistance when they use the blocks for their upcoming Shared Education numeracy lessons. Many thanks to Mr Poots for inviting our class to help. It really was our pleasure.

Today, Primary 7 were treated to an Action Mental Health workshop by Menssana. Promoting positive mental health and the strategies to maintain it is amongst the most important things we do in the Hart Memorial. Pupils were engaged in discussions and activities about their feelings and emotions, on where to go and what to do if they are hurting or scared. Being aware of our feelings and behaviours helps us to take action over our mental health. It was a really interactive and worthwhile morning for pupils. There are some great pictures as you can see.
