As part of our WAU topic (Trees) we have been growing seeds. This week we planted cress seeds. The children predicted that it would take 2 months for them to sprout so they were shocked and delighted to see little seedlings within 48 hours. We also did a science investigation to find out the conditions needed to make seeds grow. We found out that they need water, light and warmth. The children were amazed to see that seeds which sprouted in the dark produced very pale and weak seedlings.
Today we enjoyed a visit from the Baptist Church. We had an amazing journey through the bible and met two well known characters, Rahab and Thomas. The children were also given the opportunity to dress up in biblical costumes and taste food from bible times. They were also presented with a section of God’s special book, the Bible.
This morning we went on a nature walk to look for signs of autumn as part of our work on our WAU topic which is TREES this term. The children had a real fun time and found acorns, beech nuts, conkers and some interesting fungi. We went back to school to plant our seeds in cut down plastic containers. The seeds are now sleeping in their winter beds ready to start sprouting in the spring.
Many congratulations to our GTBG raffle winner — Paulina, teacher’s special certificates — Matas and Courtney, Healthy Kidz Star of the week — Evie and all those who were awarded Mathletics Certificates.
We had a visit from two officers of the PSNI last week who told us all about Stranger Danger and Firework Safety. They also mentioned how electric scooters are illegal for those under 16!!!
P4S recently took part in an online lesson to improve their coding skills. The theme was ‘Space’ and we learnt how to make our astronaut and rocket move about on the space backgrounds. We then used our skills to animate a story with speech bubbles. We had great fun and learnt lots.
Today we took our learning outside. The children thoroughly enjoyed measuring natural objects in the outdoors. We measured twigs, stones, flowers and much more. Last week we also had fun using our number bonds to play a dice game. We used calculators too. We have come to the conclusion that ......... MATHS IS FUN!
Well done to Mia-Louise who won this month’s raffle. She chose a craft box, a great choice.
Today we travelled to the CAFRE Campus at Greenmount to learn more about Nature. We had great fun pond dipping (Taylon came very well prepared with his own net 😃). The children were so excited to find tadpoles with back legs, sticklebacks, blood worms, damsel fly larva and lots of other tiny water creatures. We then went on a mini beast safari in the wildlife garden, finding creatures such as spiders, slugs, wood lice and a rather beautiful snail. The children also made their way through the Beech Maze and found the sundial in the middle, complete with Roman numerals. We all had a brilliant time on our trip. A special word of thanks to the parents who accompanied us.
